Privacy & Terms
Last updated October 2026.
Short version: we collect as little as we can, we never sell your information, and you can ask us to delete it at any time. ·
Part 1: Privacy Policy
Who We Are
Starr Prepp (“Starr Prepp,” “we,” “us”) is a free community resource hub focused on students in grades K–12 and their families, with a focus on low-income communities. We also share resources for educators. We are based in Los Angeles, California. This site is operated independently and is not affiliated with any school district, government agency, medical institution, law firm, or other organization. Lume’s Lab (our free tutoring project) and Starr HQ (our volunteer portal) are part of Starr Prepp and are covered by this policy, in addition to any agreement you sign when you join them.
Information We Collect
We collect only what we need to do what you asked us to do:
- Contact form — your first name, email address, and the message you choose to write.
- Mailing list — your email address and whether you want emails in English or Spanish.
- Event and workshop reservations — for events: your first name, email address, and the number of students attending; for workshops: your name, email address, and (optionally) a minor’s age. Never a minor’s name.
- Volunteer applications — see “Volunteer Applications” below.
- Surveys — answers to short, optional questions. These are not tied to your name or email.
- Data deletion requests — your name, email, and what you would like deleted.
- Visit information — only if you accept analytics cookies (see “Cookies & Analytics”).
Please do not send us information about a minor (your child or any student) — such as their name, school, diagnosis, evaluations, IEP or 504 details, or photos — through the contact form, mailing list, or any other form on this site. We do not need it to answer general questions, and this site is not set up to protect it. If you are an enrolled Lume’s Lab family, that information is handled only inside your Lume’s Lab account under the agreement you signed.
We do not collect last names, home addresses, payment information, precise location, government ID numbers, or other sensitive personal information through this website.
Cookies & Analytics
- Google Analytics (optional): if you click “Accept,” we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. It does not receive your name or email, advertising features are turned off, and your IP address is anonymized. If you click “No thanks,” Google Analytics is never loaded.
- Google Translate (optional): the “Español” option on this site uses Google’s free translation tool. It is machine translation provided as a convenience; if the translation and the English text differ, the English text controls.
- Remembering your choice: we remember your cookie choice only for your current visit (in your browser’s session storage), so we ask again each time you visit. Signed-in areas use short-lived, tab-only session storage that is erased when you close the tab.
- We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not sell or “share” personal information for advertising. We treat browser “Do Not Track” and Global Privacy Control signals as a “no thanks” to analytics.
You can change your mind any time with the link in the footer.
How We Use Your Information
- To respond to messages you send us.
- To send occasional updates, resource announcements, or workshop notices if you joined our mailing list.
- To confirm your event or workshop reservation and send a reminder.
- To review volunteer applications and, if you are accepted, to onboard you.
- To keep the site secure and to meet legal obligations.
Who We Share It With
We never sell or rent your information. We use a small number of service providers who process it only on our behalf: Supabase (secure database and file storage), Cloudflare (website hosting), Pabbly Connect and Google/Gmail (to send confirmation and update emails), Google Fonts (loads the site’s typefaces, which means your browser contacts Google), and — only if you opt in — Google Analytics. Please review Pabbly’s and Google’s privacy policies. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect the safety of a child or another person.
How Long We Keep It
- Contact messages: until we have responded, then deleted within 12 months.
- Mailing list: until you unsubscribe.
- Event and workshop reservations: permanently deleted 7 days after the event or workshop date.
- Volunteer applications: 14 days — see below.
- Volunteers (after they leave): we keep your volunteer agreement, hours, and training sign-offs for 7 years after your service ends, so we can verify your service and meet our legal and insurance obligations. Your other personal details (such as contact information and uploaded files) are deleted when your service ends.
- Messages inside Starr HQ and Lume’s Lab: kept for 2 years, then deleted. Messages that are part of a safety concern or incident report are kept with that report.
- Incident and safety reports involving minors: kept for as long as the law may require us to be able to respond to a claim or report, which can be many years.
- Donation and financial records: 7 years, as required for nonprofit tax and accounting purposes.
- Deletion requests: we keep the request itself for 24 months to show we handled it.
Your Privacy Choices & Deleting Your Data
Anyone — and California residents in particular — may ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Although Starr Prepp is a community project, we honor these requests for everyone. We do not discriminate against anyone for making a request.
- How: use the button below, or email starrprepp@gmail.com with the subject “Data Request.”
- Verification: to protect you, we confirm the request by replying to the email address on file. A parent or guardian may make a request for a minor’s information; an authorized agent may make a request with your written permission.
- Timing: we respond within 45 days. We may keep limited information only where the law requires it — for example, volunteer agreements, hours and training records (7 years), donation and financial records (7 years), and safety reports involving minors.
Unsubscribing From Emails
To stop receiving emails from us, reply to any email we send you with the word “unsubscribe” (or email us at the address above). We remove you within 10 business days. We may still send you messages directly related to something you asked for, such as a workshop confirmation.
Volunteer Applications
If you apply to volunteer — through this website or through a posting on a platform such as Indeed, Idealist, or LinkedIn that directs you here — we collect your name, email address, phone number (if provided), resume, and your answers about your interest and experience. We use this only to evaluate your application and to contact you about it. Only Starr Prepp’s Director has access to application materials.
- Not selected or no decision: your application, including your resume, is permanently deleted 14 days after you applied.
- Accepted as a volunteer: we keep your application and onboarding records while you are actively volunteering with Starr Prepp. After your service ends we keep only your agreement, hours, and training sign-offs for 7 years (and any mandated-reporter or minor-safety documentation we are legally required to retain), and delete the rest.
- You may ask us to delete your application earlier at any time, or ask us in writing to keep it on file so you can be considered for future openings — we then keep it for 12 months and delete it unless you ask us to keep it longer.
- We do not sell application information, and we do not make hiring-type decisions based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Minors’ Privacy
This website is intended for students in grades K–12 and their families, educators, and adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors (anyone under 18) through this site without a parent or guardian’s involvement. If you believe a minor has submitted personal information to us without a parent or guardian’s knowledge, please email starrprepp@gmail.com and we will promptly delete it. Information about enrolled Lume’s Lab students is collected only with a parent or guardian’s consent, kept in a restricted account, and handled under the enrollment agreement.
Security
We protect information with access controls, encryption in transit, restricted staff accounts, two-step verification for administrators, and automatic sign-out of inactive sessions. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affecting your information occurs, we will notify you and the appropriate authorities as California law requires.
Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use this site. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. If something is hard to use, please tell us at starrprepp@gmail.com and we will work with you to fix it.
Part 2: Terms of Use
By using this website you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Informational Use Only
Everything on this site is general information and community experience. It is not professional, medical, legal, therapeutic, or educational advice, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind.
Resource Suggestions & Community Contributions
Starr Prepp welcomes resource suggestions and ideas from the community. However, all content published on this site is reviewed, approved, and posted solely by the Starr Prepp team. We do not accept or publish direct submissions — if you'd like to contribute an idea, please reach out through our Contact page and we'll review it from there.
By sending us a resource suggestion or idea, you understand that:
- Submission does not guarantee publication.
- Starr Prepp reserves the right to edit, adapt, or decline any idea at our discretion.
- Any content we do publish based on your suggestion will be reviewed for accuracy before going live.
External Resources & Links
Our Resources page includes links to third-party websites, tools, and organizations that we believe may be helpful. While we make a genuine effort to vet every resource we share, we cannot guarantee the accuracy, safety, or continued availability of external sites.
- We are not responsible for the content, policies, or practices of any linked third-party website.
- Inclusion of a link does not constitute an endorsement of that organization or its views.
- We encourage you to review the privacy policy and terms of any external site you visit.
Always use your own judgment when following advice or accessing services from external resources. If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and seek a second opinion.
Social Media Content & Infographics
Our Find Us page may display infographics, tips, and educational content sourced from our own Instagram and Facebook accounts. While we do our best to ensure all information shared is accurate and responsibly sourced, infographics are simplified by nature and may not capture the full complexity of a topic.
We strongly encourage you to:
- Cross-reference any statistics, claims, or advice with authoritative sources before acting on them.
- Consult a qualified professional for guidance specific to your child's needs.
- Reach out to us directly if you spot an error — we take accuracy seriously and will correct mistakes promptly.
Workshops & Community Events
Workshops and community events listed on this site are offered free of charge and are intended for general educational and community-building purposes. By attending any Starr Prepp workshop or event (in person or online), you acknowledge that:
- Content presented is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional advice.
- Starr Prepp is not responsible for any decisions made based on information shared during workshops.
- Virtual workshop links are provided for registered participants only. Please do not share meeting links publicly.
- We reserve the right to remove any participant from a session who engages in disruptive, disrespectful, or harmful behavior.
Activities & Recommendations
Activities and outings suggested on this site are shared as community ideas and general recommendations. Starr Prepp does not endorse specific venues, businesses, or programs. We are not responsible for your experience at any suggested location. Always use your own judgment regarding the safety and suitability of any activity for your child.
Content Use, Printables & Downloads
Worksheets, printables, handbooks, and videos made available through Starr Prepp or Lume's Lab are free for personal, family, and classroom use. They may not be resold, redistributed, reposted, rehosted, or shared in bulk (including on other websites, social media pages, or file-sharing platforms) without our written permission. If you'd like to share one of our resources, please link back to our page rather than re-uploading the file itself.
These materials are provided for general educational and informational purposes only, and are not a substitute for individualized professional advice from a teacher, therapist, doctor, or attorney. Use of any worksheet, printable, or video is entirely at your own discretion. Starr Prepp and Lume's Lab are not liable for any outcome — educational, developmental, or otherwise — resulting from the use of these materials.
Non-Discrimination Policy
Starr Prepp is committed to being a welcoming and inclusive space for all families, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, immigration status, socioeconomic background, or any other characteristic. We do not discriminate in the provision of information, resources, or community support.
We believe every child deserves access to quality educational support, and every parent deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Acceptable Use & Security
Please use the site lawfully and respectfully. You agree not to: attempt to gain unauthorized access to any account, system, or data; probe, scan, or test the site’s security; introduce malicious code; overload or disrupt the site; scrape personal information; or submit content that is unlawful, harassing, or that infringes someone else’s rights. We may block access, suspend accounts, or remove content that violates these Terms.
Accounts (Lume’s Lab & Starr HQ)
Accounts are issued by invitation. You are responsible for keeping your password and recovery code private and for everything done through your account. Choose a strong, unique password (at least 8 characters). Staff accounts require two-step verification. Tell us right away if you think someone else has accessed your account. We may suspend or close an account that is misused or when your involvement with the program ends.
Intellectual Property
The Starr Prepp name, mascot, logos, and original content are owned by Starr Prepp. Anyone who sends us content or ideas keeps ownership of what they write but grants Starr Prepp a non-exclusive, royalty-free right to publish and display it on our channels. Anything created for Starr Prepp by volunteers, staff, or team members — including social media managers and educational designers (for example worksheets, graphics, posts, lesson materials, and other content) — is the property of Starr Prepp and may not be used, sold, or republished elsewhere without our written permission. Creators may say that they made or contributed to a piece (for example, in a portfolio or resume). Third-party names and materials belong to their owners.
Disclaimer of Warranties
This site and everything on it is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, availability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Use of this site is at your own risk.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Starr Prepp and its founder, directors, officers, volunteers, contributors, and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of this site or any content, resource, event, or activity associated with it — including decisions made based on linked resources, infographics, workshop information, or community activities.
Liability cap. Because our services are free, our total combined liability for all claims arising out of or relating to this site or our services will not exceed one hundred U.S. dollars ($100). Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you; nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including for fraud or willful misconduct.
Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Starr Prepp and its founder, directors, officers, volunteers, contributors, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of your use of the site, your violation of these Terms, content you submit, or your violation of any law or another person’s rights.
Governing Law & Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Before filing any claim, you agree to first contact us at starrprepp@gmail.com and give us 30 days to try to resolve the issue informally. Any claim that remains unresolved must be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
Changes, Termination & General
We may update this policy and these Terms from time to time; the “Last updated” date above will change, and continued use of the site after an update means you accept it. We may modify or discontinue any part of the site at any time. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. These Terms, together with any agreement you sign with Starr Prepp, are the whole agreement between you and us about this site.
